This program began in 2002 and is taught jointly with the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, the Faculty of Chemical and Pharmaceutical Sciences, the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Veterinary Sciences, and the Institute of Nutrition and Food Technology (INTA).
The main objective of the PhD Program in Nutrition and Food is to train graduates of the highest level, who have a broad command of the disciplines of the area, who are capable of developing original and relevant research in the field of nutrition and food and of transmit the knowledge from their investigations through the teaching activity of pre and postgraduate.

Mandatory Courses
The mandatory curriculum includes three essential courses for the scientific training of students:
- Nutrition and Food Biochemistry I & II: Aimed at providing the necessary tools to understand the biochemical and physiological foundations of Nutrition and Food, placing students at the forefront of knowledge in these areas.
- Bioethics: A general education course focused on confronting relevant biological facts with the principles and practice of ethics.
Elective Activities
Each student will develop an area of specialization based on their interests and requirements through elective activities, including courses and research units. Students will plan their elective activities in consultation with their academic advisor and with the approval of the Program’s Academic Committee.
Elective Courses
These are formal specialization courses on various topics in nutrition and food.
Research Unit
The Research Unit aims to allow students to become familiar with research lines developed in a chosen laboratory, learn new techniques, and participate in a research project. The duration of the Research Unit is 264 total hours, approximately one and a half months of full-time or three months of part-time work.
Seminars
Seminars aim to delve into topics of interest to students by reading updated scientific publications and subsequent analysis and discussion. Emphasis is placed on identifying the hypotheses posed, experimental designs, employed technologies, and conclusions drawn from the work.

- Nutrition and Food Biochemistry I: 15 credits
- Nutrition and Food Biochemistry II (Processes and Food Development): 15 credits
- Bioethics: 3 credits
- Research Unit: 12 credits
Total: 45 credits
Elective Activities These activities will be chosen by the student in consultation with their advisor and distributed based on the applicant’s background.
